There used to be a standard answer when it came to how often to change oil: every 3,000 miles. However, this has changed significantly over the last decade or so. Now, this number can vary widely, depending on a number of factors, including the type of vehicle you drive.

How Do You Typically Drive?

If it’s a RAM pickup truck, you’re lucky because it most likely contains an automatic oil change indicator. The nice thing about this is that it will let you know when your RAM oil change is due and when you’ll need to bring it to a RAM service center.

Answering this question can give you great insight into when you need to get your oil changed. If, for example, you mostly drive on the highway and you don’t do much towing or hauling, you probably won’t need an oil change until about 7,500 miles, and maybe not until 10,000.

If you do some off-roading and/or moderate towing and hauling, you may need to change out that oil at around the 5,000- or 6,000-mile mark.

If you frequently drive over rough terrain, in extreme weather, and/or do a lot of towing and hauling, you’re looking at between 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
