Getting a blowout while cruising down the highway can be a shock — but don’t panic! If your tire popped, follow these instructions to make it through safely, then come in to MotorWorld Chrysler to make sure your other tires are still in good shape as soon as possible.

Pulling Over

Don’t panic when you have a blowout, and don’t slam on the brakes. Hitting the brakes will make your wheels lock, making you lose control of your steering. Instead, accelerate a little and continue to steer straight.

Once you know you’re still in control, slowly remove your foot from the gas and let the car slow. Turn on your emergency lights so other drivers know to avoid you. Finally, smoothly pull to the side of the road, far enough off to stay safe.

How to Fix a Popped Tire

If you have a spare tire and jack, have enough room on the side of the road to stay safe, and are comfortable changing a tire, you can now replace the blown tire. Here’s how:

  1. Loosen the lug nuts with a wrench, then raise the vehicle with your jack, with the jack underneath the metal frame and not any molding.
  2. Remove the lug nuts, then remove the tire and replace it with your spare.
  3. Reattach the lug nuts and lower the vehicle, and you’re ready to get on the road again.
